The Outline

I did it. I managed to write my first outline and to scare myself witless in the process. I took everything I have been reading about writing an outline and produced a tight day by day plan. I must confess to stealing from Save the Cat.

Yes this plan is based on how someone might write a screenplay but in my defense I chose to co-opt Save the Cat because it is very precise and following the story arc with a modified word count allowed me to create a tight plan.

The output from this writing exercise is not going to be a book ready for publishing but a bare bones, mashed up, 50,000 words. It can be then be edited into a manuscript to send to someone i.e. agent.

I still need to come up with the final path my story will take and want to add points to write to for each day. Its always easier to get to a finish line if you can see it. In this case there will be  a finish line for each day with a huge payoff at the end.

This task is becoming more daunting rather than less as I plan. My hope is that with sufficient prep I will be excited to get started by Friday November 1st. It should feel like taking a well planned trip, exhilarating and exhausting.

Now for the big reveal. Below is my plan. Ta da.

Goodnight and good luck my fellow writers xx

  1. Ho. ly. Sh#t. This is the most terrifying/cool thing ever! And now I realize I have to force myself to sit down and figure out my words/day. Because, in my mind, 50,000 words in 30 days amounted to ~500 words/day. Math genius here.

I think all of this planning will come in handy. Even if you steer off course a bit, you still have a map to refer to. #clichemapanalogy

    But seriously, this is cool!

    • I told you it was scary. Just had to share the scare. But in all seriousness I think if I add a plot point to achieve each day then that will help steer the writing in the right direction. I also have the fear of getting to the end and being overwhelmed with how much effort it will take turn turn 50,000 words into a coherent story. I hope that if I have some sort of rough structure then I will be able to finish what I started.

      • That’s what I did with NaNoWriMo 2011 — had a 50,000 word mash-up with a couple of interesting ideas strewn in. But it was just too messy and overwhelming to sort through in the end. But that is why we are planning now!

  2. Cool idea, will be interesting to see how close your daily results stay to your plan. This is going to be my first NaNoWriMo and I am already working on my outline, although a deal more simple than yours.

I look forward to seeing how your progress turns out.
